Vintage identification guide
First Edition vs. Shadowless vs. Unlimited Pokémon cards
These terms describe major English Base Set printing distinctions. The safest identification method is to compare the edition stamp and artwork-frame layout before relying on color, condition, or a seller description.
What each term means
First Edition
The card carries the Edition 1 stamp. For English Base Set cards, the layout also uses the early Shadowless-style artwork frame.
Shadowless
The card does not carry the Edition 1 stamp, but it retains the early layout without the later drop shadow along the artwork frame.
Unlimited
The card does not carry the Edition 1 stamp and uses the later layout with a visible drop shadow along the artwork frame.
Side-by-side comparison
Use several characteristics together. A single minor color or alignment difference is not enough to identify an edition.

Details that should not be used alone
Color saturation can vary between copies, scans, cameras, lighting conditions, and print batches. It may support a broader comparison, but it is weaker than a printed stamp or a consistent layout feature.
Centering, edge wear, scratches, holofoil print lines, and surface condition describe the individual copy. They do not change a Shadowless card into an Unlimited card or create a new edition.
Identification checklist
- ✓Confirm that the card belongs to the English Base Set.
- ✓Look for the Edition 1 stamp near the lower-left of the artwork box.
- ✓Inspect the right and lower edges of the artwork frame for a drop shadow.
- ✓Compare the HP typography and other early-layout details.
- ✓Review the copyright line and card-specific printing notes.
- ✓Do not use color saturation, centering, or condition as the primary edition test.
